Legendary country music singer, songwriter and television personality Bill Anderson once told Dick Roy, “When you perform for people – be yourself – be honest about what you say and believe, and most of all enjoy what you do!” It was advice well taken and Dick has lived his musical life by those words ever since.
At the age of 12, Dick was already deeply in love with country music and he was eagerly calling square dances with the family “orchestra” for $2 a night. Soon after, he started his own band to perform the music he loves. Playing guitar, bass and a little piano, Dick fronted the band with his rich, warm vocals and performed original songs all through high school. His first concert experience was in a small Knights of Columbus hall where he saw the late great Doc Williams & The Border Riders perform.
Following high school, Dick planned to attend college to become a teacher, but the lure of country music was in his blood and Dick never made it into the classroom. He soon got married and settled in the heart of the North Country, where he and his wife Sandy were blessed with three sons who continued the family’s musical traditions and are still pickin’ and grinnin’ in their own country band. Not to be left out of all the musical fun, Dick’s grandson Jeremy soon became an accomplished singer-songwriter, marking the fifth generation of Roy family musicians.
Never one to be shy, Dick expanded his musical horizons in the 1960s when he began a bold new career in the world of radio, spinning records and sharing stories about his favorite country artists.
In the early 80s Dick opened an upscale honky tonk and over the years, many of country music’s greatest stars performed there: Dave Dudley, Red Sovine, Kitty Wells and her family, Charlie Louvin, Jim & Jesse, Dick Curless and many more.
Over the course of his career, Dick and his band have opened for, and backed up, some of country music’s biggest stars: Carl Smith, Buck Owens, George Jones & Tammy Wynette, Bill Anderson, Bill Monroe and many others, earning him the respect and gratitude of many of the all-time greatest legends of country music.
For the past 17 years, Dick has hosted the popular Classic Country Jamboree radio program featuring the best in classic country music.
From Patsy Cline and George Jones to Patty Loveless and Garth Brooks, Dick brings a wealth of knowledge, inside stories and laughter to every song he showcases on Classic Country Jamboree. But that’s not all – Dick keeps an open ear to all the latest country hits, seeking out those that display the sounds of the origin of the country format. These are the songs that pay homage to the legendary greats, newly written songs and remakes of the originals.
